Thomas Beckett was the Archbishop of Canterbury in the 12th century, renowned for his conflict with King Henry II over the rights and privileges of the Church. His martyrdom in 1170, after being assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral, made him a symbol of the struggle for Church independence and he was canonized as a saint shortly thereafter.
