Tokhtar Akhanov
Tokhtar Akhanov is an 86-year-old agronomist from Almaty who dedicated 15 years to cultivating the famous Almaty apricot on a 3.2-hectare plot of land. Despite his hard work and the establishment of a productive orchard with around 700 trees, he lost his land due to legal disputes over its ownership, which had been sold without his consent. Now living in a rented apartment, he has become a symbol of the struggle against unlawful land sales and the emotional toll of losing a lifelong labor of love.
