Tomas Francisco Reilly
Monsignor Tomas Francisco Reilly was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic during the tumultuous era of Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship. He became known for his vocal opposition to the regime, particularly through a sermon in March 1961 where he condemned the government's persecution of political prisoners. This act of defiance led to severe repercussions, including threats against his life and a violent attack on his residence. Reilly was arrested on the same night Trujillo was assassinated, but he was later released by President Joaquín Balaguer, who sought to reassure the church in the aftermath of the dictator's death.
