Tūroa is a representative of the iwi advocating for greater involvement and decision-making power regarding the management of the Ruapehu ski fields. Recently, he has been in the news for taking legal action against the Department of Conservation (DoC) and the minister, expressing concerns over the lack of co-existence and consultation with the iwi in the operation of the ski areas, which are significant for both local culture and the economy.
