Unknown Dutch Boy
A 17-year-old Dutch boy made headlines after waking from knee surgery unable to speak his native language, Dutch, and instead communicating solely in English. This rare phenomenon, identified as Foreign Language Syndrome (FLS), left him unable to recognize his parents and believe he was in the United States. Despite his prior knowledge of English, he could only speak it in a limited capacity. After several hours, he gradually began to understand Dutch again, and within a few days, his ability to communicate in his mother tongue returned. This case is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first recorded instance of FLS in a teenager, highlighting the complexities of language retention and neurological responses to anesthesia.
