Urmila Chaudhary

Urmila Chaudhary is a prominent Nepali activist and former kamalari, who fought against the exploitative practice of sending young girls from the Tharu community to work as bonded laborers in wealthy households. After enduring a life of servitude for twelve years, she became a voice for the voiceless, leading the movement for the liberation of kamalari girls in Nepal. Her activism gained international recognition, resulting in numerous awards, including the Global Anti-Racism Champion Award from the U.S. government in 2024. Urmila's life story has been featured in documentaries, highlighting her journey from oppression to empowerment, and she continues to advocate for the rights of marginalized communities.
