USS Fitzgerald

The USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) is a guided-missile destroyer in the United States Navy, commissioned in 1995. It is named after Lieutenant William Charles Fitzgerald, who was killed in action during World War II. The ship is part of the Arleigh Burke-class and is primarily tasked with anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, and anti-surface warfare. The USS Fitzgerald gained international attention in June 2017 after a collision with a merchant vessel, resulting in the tragic loss of seven sailors. The ship was involved in a recent incident in July 2025, where it faced a tense confrontation with an Iranian helicopter in the Sea of Oman.
