Vasyl Fedorенко
Vasyl Fedorенко is a Ukrainian military officer and the sole chaplain of the Azovstal steel plant during the intense battles of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Born on July 20, 1974, in the Melitopol district of Zaporizhia Oblast, he grew up in a patriotic family and underwent a spiritual transformation that led him to become a priest in the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. In May 2022, he was captured along with other defenders during the siege of Mariupol, spending over three years in harsh Russian captivity, including time in notorious prisons. Fedorенко returned to Ukraine in June 2023 as part of a prisoner exchange, where he continues to share his experiences and support fellow soldiers as a chaplain.
