
Velupillai Prabhakaran
Velupillai Prabhakaran (1954-2009) was the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a militant organization that fought for an independent Tamil state in Sri Lanka. He founded the LTTE in 1976 and led it through a protracted civil conflict against the Sri Lankan government, which lasted nearly three decades. Prabhakaran became known for his strategic military acumen and was seen as a symbol of Tamil nationalism. His leadership was characterized by a commitment to achieving a separate Tamil Eelam, and he was involved in numerous violent campaigns throughout the conflict. Prabhakaran was killed in May 2009, marking the end of the LTTE and the Sri Lankan civil war.
