Vicenzo Perugia was an Italian handyman and painter, who gained notoriety for stealing the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911. Working at the museum, Perugia concealed himself overnight and removed the painting the next morning, believing he was acting in a patriotic manner to return it to Italy. His theft remained undiscovered for over two years until he attempted to sell the painting, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
