Victor Gruen
Victor Gruen, born Viktor Grünbaum in Vienna in 1903, was an influential architect and urban planner, best known as the pioneer of the modern shopping mall. Emigrating to the United States in 1938, he designed the first enclosed shopping malls in the 1950s, fundamentally changing retail architecture and urban planning. Gruen envisioned malls not just as commercial spaces but as community hubs that would provide a respite from congested city centers. His concepts emphasized the importance of integrating leisure and retail, advocating for pedestrian-friendly environments. Despite his groundbreaking ideas, Gruen later became critical of how his designs were utilized, lamenting their transformation into mere consumerist spaces devoid of the cultural and social functions he had intended.
