VII. Kelemen, born Pietro de Luna, was an Avignon Pope from 1378 to 1394. He is best known for his opposition to the legitimacy of the Turin Shroud, which he declared a man-made religious artifact, thereby fueling the ongoing debate about its authenticity. His papacy was marked by the struggles of the Western Schism, a period of division within the Catholic Church.
