Vlastimil Hort

Vlastimil Hort was a renowned Czech grandmaster chess player, celebrated for his remarkable career during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. He gained recognition for his competitive spirit, especially during his encounters with legendary players like Bobby Fischer, against whom he faced defeat in a notable tournament. While he did not achieve the title of world champion, Hort's impressive victories over renowned players such as Vasily Smyslov and Anatoly Karpov solidified his status in the chess community. He famously won a match against Boris Spassky in the quarterfinals of the World Championship in 1972. Hort's contributions to chess and his legacy as an exceptionally talented player are remembered fondly by enthusiasts. He passed away in mid-May at his home in Germany.
