Włodzimierz Pijanka, born on August 9, 1937, in Wołomin, Poland, was a prominent Polish Slavicist and Macedonist recognized for his critical work on the Macedonian language and its identity. He played a significant role in developing Macedonian studies in Poland and Austria and served as the first lecturer of Polish language at the University of Skopje from 1959 to 1967. Pijanka earned his PhD from the University of Warsaw and authored numerous scholarly articles and books on Macedonian linguistics, advocating for the distinctiveness of the Macedonian language against Bulgarian denialism. He was a member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts and was instrumental in the international recognition of the Macedonian language.
