Waldemar Cierpinski is a former East German long-distance runner born on June 28, 1948, best known for winning the marathon at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where he finished ahead of Jerome Drayton, who placed sixth. Cierpinski also won the marathon gold in the 1980 Moscow Olympics and is regarded as one of the elite marathon runners of his time.
