William James (Bill) McAndrew was a Canadian military historian, author, and athlete, born on January 22, 1934, in Dalhousie, New Brunswick. He had a diverse career spanning a 12-year military service in the Canadian Army, where he was commissioned as an officer at 18, and later pursued an academic path, earning a doctorate in history after being a high school dropout. Bill's love for travel and exploration took him to various countries, including Germany, Korea, and Ghana, where he trained troops after Ghana's independence. He authored numerous works on military history while working at the Directorate of History in Ottawa, and was known for his wit and self-deprecating humor. Bill passed away on December 19, 2024, in Ottawa, leaving behind a legacy of intellectual curiosity and a deep appreciation for history.
