Yaakov Israel De Haan was a Dutch-Jewish writer, poet, and journalist born in 1881. Known for his provocative works addressing homosexuality, he authored the novel 'Pijpelijntjes' which caused a stir in early 20th-century Europe. De Haan initially embraced Zionism but later became a prominent anti-Zionist figure within the Haredi community in Jerusalem. His life was marked by a unique blend of identities, and he became a symbol for both the LGBTQ+ community in the Netherlands and the ultra-Orthodox sect of Neturei Karta. He was tragically murdered in 1924, an event often cited as a significant political assassination in modern Israeli history.
