
Yakov Grigorevich Kutsenko
Yakov Grigorevich Kutsenko, born on November 22, 1915, in Kyiv, was a prominent Ukrainian weightlifter and coach who became the first flagbearer for the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games during the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. A 14-time champion of the USSR and a significant figure in Soviet weightlifting, Kutsenko contributed greatly to the sport's development in the USSR as a coach from 1954 to 1963, leading the national team to international success. His athletic career was marked by numerous records, including 13 that surpassed world standards. Kutsenko also published several books detailing his life and experiences in sport. He passed away on August 13, 1988, in Kyiv and is remembered for his impactful legacy in weightlifting.
