Zaira Arias Berrocal

Zaira Arias Berrocal is a former member of the political party Perú Libre and served as the alternate congresswoman for Guillermo Bermejo, who was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison for terrorism. Despite running for a congressional seat in the 2021 elections, Arias did not secure enough votes to be elected. She has faced controversy in her political career, including allegations of signature forgery that led to her expulsion from Perú Libre. In January 2023, she was arrested for throwing red paint at police during a peace march. Following Bermejo's conviction, questions arise about her potential role in Congress as the regulations stipulate that an alternate cannot assume a seat in cases of terrorism.
