Žemaitė (1845–1921) was a prominent Lithuanian writer and folklorist known for her contributions to Lithuanian literature and her portrayal of peasant life. Her literary career began later in life after facing personal hardships, including the death of her husband and the responsibilities of raising her children. She embarked on her first journey at the age of 53, traveling to Riga, and later faced the challenges of war during her journey to America amidst World War I, where she aimed to support war victims and reconnect with her family.
