Zhang Youmiao

Zhang Youmiao is a 26-year-old non-binary individual who was sectioned twice in 2018 and 2019 after participating in protests concerning compensation for housing demolitions in Xi'an, China. Their experiences of being forcibly hospitalized and pressured into medication without a formal diagnosis illustrate the ongoing abuses of the mental health system in China, particularly against those advocating for their rights.
