Zofia Posmysz was a Polish journalist, writer, and screenwriter, born on August 23, 1923, in Kraków, Poland. She was a member of the resistance during World War II and survived imprisonment in the Auschwitz and Ravensbrück concentration camps. Arrested by the Gestapo at the age of 18 for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets, she was liberated by American forces in May 1945. After the war, she studied at the University of Warsaw and worked at Polish Radio. Posmysz published her autobiographical account, 'Passenger from Cabin 45,' in 1959, which was later adapted into a radio play and a film. Her experiences informed her writing, including the novel 'Passenger,' which tells the story of an SS guard who believes she sees one of her former prisoners years later. Posmysz passed away on August 8, 2022, at the age of 98.
