Zou Yan

Zou Yan was a Chinese philosopher from the Warring States period, best known for his development of the 'Five Elements' theory, which correlates the elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water with different dynastic virtues and the cyclical nature of history. His ideas influenced political thought during the Qin Dynasty, as they were adopted by Qin Shi Huang to legitimatize his rule. Zou Yan's theories provided a framework for understanding historical change and governance, positioning him as a significant figure in ancient Chinese philosophy and history.
