Zubayir Kazi, a 24-year-old climber from San Jose, California, made headlines after surviving a harrowing 500-foot slide down Mount Shasta during his first attempt to summit the icy peak. After losing his supplies and sustaining serious injuries while glissading down Avalanche Gulch, Kazi crawled through the night without food, water, or a means to call for help. Despite suffering significant lacerations and nerve damage, he managed to reach Horse Camp Cabin, where he was eventually found and rescued.
