Pope Benedict XVI, born Joseph Ratzinger in 1927, served as Pope from 2005 until his resignation in 2013, becoming the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years. His papacy was characterized by a commitment to traditional Catholic teachings, a focus on the importance of faith in a secular world, and efforts to address the sexual abuse crisis within the Church. After his resignation, he took the title Pope Emeritus and lived a life of prayer and reflection until his death in 2022.
