Alaa M.

Alaa M. is a Syrian former doctor who was recently sentenced to life imprisonment in Frankfurt for crimes against humanity, including the torture and murder of patients while working as an assistant doctor in military hospitals in Syria during the civil war. Born in Homs, he fled to Germany in 2015, where he initially integrated into society and worked as an orthopedist until his arrest in 2020 after being recognized by former detainees. His trial, which lasted over three years, highlighted the complexities of accountability for war crimes, especially given the overlapping narratives of victimhood and guilt surrounding the Syrian conflict.
