
Ana Mercedes Herrera
Ana Mercedes Herrera is a prominent Venezuelan biologist and researcher who has made significant contributions to the field of eco-physiology, particularly in the study of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) in plants. She earned her bachelor's degree in biology from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) in 1972 and later obtained her PhD in Plant Sciences from the University of London in 1977. Currently affiliated with the Tropical Botany Center at UCV, Herrera is recognized both nationally and internationally for her research, which focuses on the physiological regulation of plants that thrive in arid environments. In February 2025, she was awarded the Mujeres en Ciencia Prize by the Academy of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences of Venezuela (Acfiman) for her outstanding academic achievements and contributions to scientific knowledge.
