Antonine Maillet was a prominent Acadian writer from New Brunswick, known for her impactful contributions to Canadian literature. Born on May 10, 1929, she became the first non-European to win the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1979 for her novel 'Pélagie-la-Charrette,' which highlighted Acadian history and culture. Throughout her career, Maillet published over 50 works including novels, plays, and children's books, becoming a powerful voice for the Acadian community. Her work 'La Sagouine' is particularly celebrated, having been performed thousands of times. Maillet was recognized with numerous awards and honors, including being made a Commander of France’s Legion of Honour. She passed away at the age of 95 on February 17, 2024.
