Bernard Irwin

Bernard Irwin was a Roscommon-born doctor who became the first recipient of the Medal of Honor, awarded retrospectively for his bravery during the Apache Indian Wars. His actions in 1861, where he rescued surrounded soldiers, marked the beginning of a notable legacy of Irish recipients of this prestigious award.
