Carlos Diegues

Carlos Diegues was a renowned Brazilian film director, screenwriter, and producer, celebrated as one of the leading figures of the Cinema Novo movement that emerged in Brazil during the 1960s and 1970s. Born on February 14, 1939, in the city of Maceió, Diegues used his films to explore themes of social justice, identity, and the cultural intricacies of Brazil. His notable works include 'Ganga Zumba' (1964) and 'The Last Voyage' (1976), which garnered international acclaim and showcased Brazil's cinematic potential on the global stage. Over his prolific career, he directed more than 20 films, including 'Goodbye, Brazil,' which competed for the Palme d'Or at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival.
