Claus Peymann
Claus Peymann, born on June 7, 1937, in Bremen, was a renowned German theater director and general manager, celebrated for his provocative style and significant contributions to the German-speaking theater scene. He began his career in the politically charged atmosphere of the 1970s student theater, gaining prominence with the premiere of Peter Handke's 'Publikumsbeschimpfung' in 1966. Peymann gained notoriety during the Stammheim trial as the artistic director in Stuttgart, and his tenure at the Vienna Burgtheater solidified his legacy as a theatrical titan, characterized by collaborations with luminaries like Thomas Bernhard and Peter Handke. His bold productions often sparked controversy, including the uproar caused by the premiere of Bernhard's 'Heldenplatz' in 1988. After leading the Berliner Ensemble from 1999 to 2017, Peymann continued to direct until his health declined. He passed away on Wednesday at his home in Berlin-Köpenick after a prolonged illness, marking the end of an era in theater.
