Clemente Domínguez y Gómez, self-proclaimed Pope Gregory XVII, founded the Palmarian Catholic Church after claiming to have received visions of the Virgin Mary. His papacy began in 1978 and was marked by dramatic claims and controversies, including the excommunication of Pope John Paul II.
