Demetrios I, born in 1923, was the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 1972 until his retirement in 1991. He was known for his efforts in promoting dialogue between the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, as well as his commitment to environmental issues and the rights of religious minorities. During his tenure, he sought to strengthen the position of the Greek Orthodox Church in Turkey, advocating for the reopening of the Theological School of Halki, which had been closed by the Turkish government in 1971. His legacy is marked by a focus on ecumenism and interfaith dialogue.
