Emmanuel Tjibaou

Emmanuel Tjibaou, a 49-year-old independentist, has emerged as a significant political figure in New Caledonia amid crucial negotiations regarding the territory's sovereignty. Previously seen as a civil society actor, he was appointed president of the Union calédonienne in late 2024 and later became the leader of a delegation representing the Front de libération nationale kanak et socialiste (FLNKS) in discussions with the French government.
