Francisco Coto Fernández (1924-2024) was a pioneering Costa Rican photographer known for his evocative documentation of significant historical events, urban landscapes, and everyday life. His work includes iconic images such as the visit of President John F. Kennedy to Costa Rica and the eruption of Volcán Irazú in 1963. Coto's mastery of light and composition in both black and white and color photography has earned him a lasting legacy in Latin American photography. He was also instrumental in advocating for the rights of professional photographers in Costa Rica and contributed to the establishment of regulations for the profession.
