Franz Oppenhoff
Franz Oppenhoff was a conservative lawyer who served as the provisional mayor of Aachen, Germany, after the city was captured by American forces in October 1944. His leadership was part of an experiment in denazification by the Allies, aiming to establish a cooperative civil administration in post-war Germany. Tragically, Oppenhoff was assassinated by an SS commando in March 1945, reflecting the violent remnants of Nazi loyalty in the waning days of the regime.
