Friedrich von Friedeburg was a German admiral who served as the last commander of the Kriegsmarine during World War II. He played a pivotal role in the surrender of German forces in Northwest Germany on May 7, 1945, signing the capitulation document at the headquarters of British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. Following Germany's defeat, Friedeburg faced the consequences of the war's atrocities, ultimately choosing to take his own life on May 23, 1945, to avoid capture.
