Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), was a French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist who significantly influenced the field of natural history. As the intendant of the Jardin du Roy, now known as the Jardin des Plantes, he transformed it into a prestigious center for research and education. Buffon is best known for his monumental work 'Histoire naturelle,' which encompasses 36 volumes and presents a comprehensive classification of animal and plant species, illustrating the dynamic nature of life and the extinction of certain species. His contributions to science and natural philosophy have earned him the title 'Prince of Naturalists.'
