Giovanni Battista Gisleni was an Italian architect renowned for his contributions to Baroque architecture in Eastern Europe. Active during the 17th century, he is best known for designing the Cartusian Monastery in Berёza, Belarus, which stands as one of the most significant examples of mature Baroque architecture in the region. Completed between 1648 and 1689, the monastery was commissioned by the Grand Chancellor of Lithuania, Kazimierz Leon Sapieha, and featured elements typical of fortified structures, including towers and a monumental church. Gisleni's work exemplifies the grandeur of the Baroque style, characterized by elaborate details and a harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape.
