Giovanni Bertoldi
Giovanni Bertoldi was a notable 14th-century figure from Serravalle, now part of the Republic of San Marino. Born between 1350 and 1360, he joined the Franciscan Order at the age of sixteen and pursued higher education at the University of Pavia and the University of Bologna. He became the provincial minister of the Marche region in 1405 and was later appointed the Bishop of Fermo by Pope Gregory XII in 1410. Bertoldi is best known for his scholarly contributions, particularly his Latin translation of Dante Alighieri's 'Divina Commedia,' which he presented at the Council of Constance in 1416. His work is significant in the context of literary and ecclesiastical reform during the Renaissance. He passed away in Fano in 1445, leaving a lasting legacy that is commemorated in Serravalle through a plaque and a square named in his honor.
