
Heath Shuler
Heath Shuler is a former U.S. Representative from North Carolina, known for his tenure in Congress from 2007 to 2013. A former professional football player, Shuler played as a quarterback for the Washington Redskins before entering politics. He was a member of the Democratic Party and served as the leader of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats. During his time in office, Shuler became known for his opposition to the more progressive elements within the Democratic Party, particularly during the party's struggles in the 2010 midterms. He famously mounted an unsuccessful challenge to Nancy Pelosi’s leadership in an attempt to reshape the party’s direction. After leaving Congress, Shuler has remained active in various business and community initiatives.
