Heidy Mares, 32, is a resident of Culiacán who has experienced the harrowing effects of the ongoing drug cartel violence in Sinaloa. She works at a state pension institute and has been deeply affected by the recent escalation of violence between rival factions of the Sinaloa cartel. Heidy recalls the day when gunfire erupted in her neighborhood, shattering the fragile calm and marking the beginning of a new phase of conflict that has resulted in a staggering increase in violence and disappearances in the region.
