Hernando de Magallanes

Hernando de Magallanes

explorer Portugal

Hernando de Magallanes was a Portuguese explorer known for leading the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. Born in 1480, he served the Spanish crown and embarked on his historic voyage in 1519, seeking a westward route to the Spice Islands. His journey was fraught with challenges, including treacherous waters and conflicts with indigenous populations. Magallanes is credited with discovering the strait that now bears his name, the Strait of Magellan, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He died in the Philippines in 1521, but his expedition continued under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, ultimately completing the circumnavigation in 1522. Magallanes' journey significantly expanded European knowledge of the world and demonstrated the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
