Horace Plunkett

Horace Plunkett

politician Ireland

Horace Plunkett (1854-1932) was a pioneering figure in the establishment of cooperative societies in Ireland. He founded his first co-operative creamery in Ballyhahill, Limerick, in 1891, and was instrumental in creating agricultural credit societies, also known as village or land banks. His efforts aimed to combat the exploitative practices of 'gombeen men'—money lenders who charged exorbitant interest rates to vulnerable individuals. Plunkett's work laid the foundation for the modern credit union movement, promoting self-reliance and dignity among rural communities. His vision led to the establishment of 268 credit societies by 1908, which significantly contributed to improving financial accessibility for Irish farmers.
