Hsieh Chieh-shih was a prominent Taiwanese politician and the foreign minister of Manchukuo, the Japanese puppet state established in Northeast China. Born in 1879 in Hsinchu, Hsieh rose to prominence after years of education and work in Japan and China, eventually serving as a key diplomat under the last Qing emperor, Puyi. His career was marked by efforts to promote diplomatic recognition for Manchukuo and to facilitate Taiwanese migration to the region. Hsieh returned to Taiwan for the first time in 1935, where he was celebrated as a significant figure in a lavish homecoming that coincided with his son's wedding.
