Huang Xuhua was a prominent Chinese engineer and academic, best known as the chief designer of China's first-generation nuclear submarines. Born on March 12, 1926, in Guangdong Province, he dedicated his life to the advancement of China's naval capabilities. After studying shipbuilding at National Chiao Tung University, he joined the Communist Party of China in 1949. Huang's exceptional skills and political integrity led him to be recruited for top-secret nuclear submarine projects starting in 1958, where he played a crucial role in overcoming significant technological challenges. Over his distinguished career, he received numerous accolades, including the Republic Medal and China's highest scientific honor, the State Supreme Science and Technology Award. Huang passed away on February 6, 2025, at the age of 99, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the field of naval engineering.
