Captured in 1994 in Sudan and extradited to France, he has been serving multiple life sentences for his crimes since then, including high-profile operations like the OPEC headquarters hostage crisis in 1975. Despite his violent legacy, he has been characterized by some, including former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, as a freedom fighter.
