Ilaşcu was arrested and sentenced to death by the self-proclaimed Transnistrian authorities, becoming a symbol of resistance and injustice. His case garnered international attention, leading to his release after nine years of wrongful imprisonment. He later became a member of the Moldovan Parliament and the Romanian Senate, advocating for the rights of Romanians in Moldova. Ilaşcu passed away at the age of 73 on November 17, 2023, and his contributions to the fight for national identity and rights are commemorated in both Romania and Moldova.
