Jerónimo de Aguilar was a Spanish Franciscan friar who became a key figure in the early Spanish conquests in Mexico. After being shipwrecked and living among the Maya for several years, he learned their language, which later enabled him to serve as an interpreter for Hernán Cortés during the conquest of the Aztec Empire. His knowledge and skills were vital in facilitating communication between the Spanish and indigenous peoples.
