Johann Peter Weissmuller, known as Johnny Weissmuller, was a celebrated swimmer and actor born in the early 20th century in what was then Austro-Hungary. He gained fame as an Olympic champion swimmer, winning five gold medals and setting numerous world records, including being the first to swim 100 meters under one minute. Beyond his swimming prowess, Weissmuller became a cultural icon for his portrayal of Tarzan in film, a role he played twelve times between 1932 and 1948, and for which he created the iconic Tarzan yell. His athletic career was marked by dominance and an undefeated streak that lasted a decade. Later in life, he faced health challenges but remained a beloved figure until his passing at age 79. Weissmuller's funeral was held with state honors, reflecting his lasting impact on sports and cinema.
